Your Legacy – What will be your Eulogy?

110_F_50296666_f7hL2eOU6Kzxwkg3X8mRpMugky7D7TtcA few things have happened this week which has caused me to stop and reflect – and it is has been in these moments of reflection where I have really contemplated time and the amount of time we all have on this earth, and how important it actually is in terms of how we use it. Now without getting all metaphysical, when it is all said and done, time is really the only thing we have, it is a finite resource, and the clock keeps ticking. And so I ended up asking myself what I now consider to be a very profound question – ‘when the last grain of sand passes through my hourglass, what will be my legacy?’. I then asked myself 3 further important questions :

Did I live?

Did I love?

Did I matter? Continue reading

Reacting & Responding

Recently I had the privilege to spend 14 days with a group of exceptional people as they progressed through a very challengingbusinessman_stare_nail_237620_m  program to become certified Trainers – not just ordinary Trainers, but outstanding Trainers who are able to deliver content and facilitate a room without the ‘crutch’ of utilising PowerPoint, and indeed without notes. As I witnessed the transformations of the individuals over the 2 weeks, there were many lessons and insights I was able to identify and absorb, and as I reflect now on the journey they have travelled together, there is one significant distinction that stands above all else – and that is, their ability to respond versus react.

Decision Making – How do successful people make them?

110_F_49648446_UTAi9lJ4sxrWFhtTuOM4DDG1GJhJoDc9Have you ever struggled to make a decision? Have you been in a situation where there is more than 1 option, knowing that a course of action needs to be taken, and yet cannot determine which way to go, or worse still, you fail to make a decision at all?  I have, and as I reflect back on my life and the decisions I have made, I recognise the number of times where I have been faced with either a challenge or an opportunity, and for whatever reason, I either made a poor decision or no decision at all, resulting in missed opportunities in my career, business or relationships.  And it got me thinking – how do successful people make decisions? Is there a specific strategy that they employ that maximises their chances of success?  What separates the people who seem to always have the golden touch, from those who don’t seem to have the success they are looking for? This lead me on a quest to understand what sets apart successful people and the not so successful in terms of decision making. What I discovered was 4 key decision making strategies, that when implemented, resulted in strong committed decisions, and significantly improved outcomes: Continue reading

The 6 Most Important Principles of Leadership

110_F_50589232_ZIO9DlA24mtDOJB2as48AOkCpKBUDrldA couple of months ago, a group of business colleagues and I were enjoying a very in-depth and intriguing conversation around what makes an outstanding leader. Whilst each of us are now running our own business or are in a position of authority and responsibility, we all seemed to have different backgrounds, had been brought up with different values and had enjoyed the benefit and the challenge, of strong leaders, coaches and mentors along our journey. As such, it was interesting to listen to and understand what leadership meant to each of the members of the group. We spent hours discussing, and sometimes debating, what we thought was the top leadership principle that we had embraced and utilised to achieve the results we had achieved thus far. Out of the discussion, one thing became very clear – we all had different perspectives on the number one leadership principle. Continue reading

The 4 Levels of Thinking & Experience

110_F_38152814_kE5AtKHuw9eGq0uVXTqClmbKMDI3oR0ORecently I spent an extraordinary weekend with a couple of exceptional people, both of whom have built extremely successful businesses and who now spend the majority of their time mentoring other business owners on how to take their business to the next level. It was a fascinating experience, and one where absolutely no question was off limits – in fact, both business owners literally “lifted the lid” off their businesses and shared the key insights and blueprints on how they have been able to build such sustainable and replicable businesses. Of all the gold nuggets and pearls of wisdom they shared that weekend, there was one conversation that really shook me to the core and made me really stop and think – they shared the 4 Levels of Thinking & Experience. Guard Your Thoughts

Guard & ProtectI have been doing a great deal of thinking lately, in particular in relation to the following principle written by James Allen over 100 years ago –

“As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he”. Is it really true that what we think about, we become? Do thoughts really become things? To be brutally honest, I really don’t know. However, the research suggests that philosophers the world over agree on one overriding principle – we do become what we think about.

If this is the case, then I have realised just how critical it is to control my thinking. I am now starting to better understand that my level of thinking controls my moods, it controls what I say, it controls my actions, and ultimately it controls my character and destiny. Continue reading
